Why it matters

Your switchboard is the gateway to an electric home.

As Perth homes swap gas for electric and add chargers and batteries, the switchboard is where it all has to fit. Many older boards were built for a fraction of today’s load, and with federal battery rebates and energy-savings incentives accelerating the shift, more households are hitting that ceiling. The good news: it’s a one-off upgrade that sets the house up for everything that follows.

Induction cooktops

Replacing gas needs its own ~32A circuit and board capacity.

Heat-pump hot water

Efficient electric hot water adds a dedicated circuit.

EV chargers

A 7kW charger wants its own circuit, and often three-phase.

Home batteries & solar

Need spare board space and compliant metering.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading before going electric?

The quickest tells are ceramic fuses (rather than circuit breakers), no safety switches (RCDs), a board with no spare ways, or one that already trips when big appliances run together. If you have any of those and you are adding a high-draw appliance like an EV charger, induction cooktop or heat-pump hot water, an upgrade is likely. A licensed electrician confirms it by checking your spare capacity and main-switch rating on-site.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for an EV charger?

Often, yes. A 7kW home charger needs its own dedicated circuit, and an older single-phase board may not have the spare capacity or the physical room for it. Some homes are fine; others need extra circuits, a larger board, or a move to three-phase. We assess it before quoting so there are no surprises.

What does a switchboard upgrade cost in Perth?

A switchboard upgrade in Perth typically costs $1,500–$3,500 depending on your home, the number of circuits and whether there is asbestos backing. See our pricing guide for a full breakdown, or request a callback for a fixed quote.
